‘CD-R’, ‘CD-Recordable’, ‘Recordable CD Promo’ or ‘Reference CD’. A CD-R is the modern day equivalent of a vinyl test pressing. Around the early ‘90s, record companies started creating a small number of a release (single or album) on recordable CDs. These items are usually burned in extremely low numbers (25-50), and are created for the following reasons:
a) A test disc for the artist, management, or producer.
b) A small ‘servicing’ to radio stations
c) In-house use by the record label employees.
They don’t usually quote a catalog number, and due to common CD recording equipment, they are subject to being bootlegged. Everything here of course is genuine as these were made specifically for Alan and came directly from the cutting rooms.

Alan's comments : |

“Each of these was made specifically for me to double check the final quality of the CD in question on my home equipment and in a listening environment I was familiar with. A CD-R will stand repeated plays as it is no different to a standard disc in that sense – however, due to their scarcity, they should still be kept unplayed to preserve their condition.”
