For over 30 years, the ‘Recording Custom’ has set a benchmark for excellence. Possibly the most recorded drum in history, it has enjoyed an unparalleled history of success and innovation. Although trends come and go, the Recording Custom, with its birch shells and pristine interior and exterior finish, delivers a sound the seems “pre-EQ-ed”, perfect for studio or multi-miking in any situation. Un-miked, it will hold its own with power and tone to spare.

All birch shell
Birch shells produce a lower fundamental tone than maple. Their crisp sound quality with short attack decay makes them optimal for recording situations. Yamaha’s air seal system shells feature select birch wood cut in plies, positioned with staggered diagonal seams, and sealed together with evenly distributed air pressure. This process ensures that every drum shell is in round and of uniform thickness while providing superior tone quality and durability.
Hi-tension lugs
Precision-machined lug nuts provide noise-free control, due to their springless casing design. Manufactured as genuine one-piece units, the high-tension lugs have established one of the principal trends in modern design.
Bass drum spurs
A sturdy hexagonal design and fixed angle position allow the spurs to withstand bass drum kicks. Height adjustment and the releasing and retracting of the pointed spur are made easily with a drum key.
Mounted toms & floor toms equipped with YESS mounts
Long found on the high-end drum kits is the original YESS (Yamaha Enhanced Sustain System) mounting system on all maple custom toms and floor toms. This rod clamp system allows attachment of the drum to the tom holder without the need of a hole in the drum shell for the rod to pass through. The YESS clamp is attached to the shell at the nodal point with two bolts so as to allow the shell to vibrate freely without degrading the shell’s dynamic range and sustain. The nodal point is the location on a shell with the least amount of vibration allowing for the mount to have minimal affect to the resonance of the shell.
Ball clamp & triple tom holder
This round ball clamp has long been a fundamental part of Yamaha system drums. Made of super-hard resin, the ball is held firmly in place with a steel plate and large wing bolt. While providing ease of operation, this system also delivers total freedom in setting and superior stability. The triple tom holder accommodates two toms as well as a cymbal holder to provide a wide variety of set up possibilities.

“The kit was purchased specifically when it was decided to include live drums as part of the recording of DM’s ‘SOFAD’ and the subsequent decision to take that performance concept into the live arena. The advice I received at the time was that this Yamaha kit would be the most reliable, hard wearing, best sounding drum set for the job. And it certainly proved to be so. To enhance the experience and bring variety, I added two different and much sought after Noble & Cooley snare drums. I have used the drums many times since the tour at my studio in recording sessions for all the Recoil albums since ‘Unsound Methods’. With some new skins and a nice polish, it will be ready to go, sounding as good as it has ever done.”
